Pelvic Pain Treatments
Pelvic pain can affect any woman at any age, although it seems to be most common in women between the ages of 18-25 years old. Unfortunately, we currently know more about what does NOT cause the condition than does. Vulvodynia is NOT caused by infections such as STD’s, cancer, or neurologic disorders. Its diagnosis occurs when all of these possibilities have been ruled out and the chronic vulvar pain persists.
Some contributing factors that may put a woman at risk for Vulvodynia may be: weakness of the muscles that support the pelvic organs, prior nerve damage to the pelvic area, increased density of vulvar nerve fibers, genetic factors like chronic inflammation, chronic yeast infections and hormonal factors.
